Exhibited at The Senior Studio Art Exhibition at Gund Commons, Gamber, OH and 21 Studio Art Majors: Making Sense at the Gund, Gambier, OH.

In this work, material presence comes into being not as representation or extension or achievement, but as perceptual reality. Sheets of steel are polished, drilled and woven into. The steps themselves are simple, but repeat to create an almost totalizing sense of continuity. 'Almost' because this sense of continuity is inevitably interrupted by mistake. It is almost perfect. Because and despite of my inscription I hinder the steel from use, but I also fail to completely abstract it – there is nothing to recognize in it but an imperfect pattern. Nonetheless, it remains present, and so must be grappled with both in its intended perfection and executed imperfection. As Untitled becomes real in this way – without use and without meaning, simply there – questions emerge. Not only of use and meaning, but the possibility of having no use and no meaning, of being nothing at all. To extend significance to the simple fact of steel, string and light, is to allow presence a sense of significance in and of itself.
